We built it before anyone asked us to.

A JSE-listed mining chemicals and water-treatment group put out a brief for a mixed reality experience. Rather than describe one, we built a working proof of concept on a Quest 3 — a complete operation from drill and blast through to water treatment, anchored to a real table — and recorded it. These are captures from inside the headset, not renders.

What it is

Three layers. Anyone can stop at the first one.

Interaction adds depth; it is never required. The experience is complete for a visitor who does nothing but look — which is exactly what you want on a stand, where half the people in a headset have never worn one.

The living model

The default state. Nobody has to touch anything.

The whole operation runs as an animated diorama on the table: trucks on the ramp, the plant turning, water moving through the circuit. A visitor who never lifts a finger still walks away with an immediate picture of how much of their world you are actually in.

The story layer

Stage by stage, with your products in place.

Select a stage and the model focuses on it — and what you supply at that point appears where it works, not on a slide next to it. Your rep drives the order, so the tour goes to the part of the operation this particular customer buys from.

The detail moments

Depth on demand, under a minute each.

The short zoom-ins that answer the question a customer actually asks: a blast firing on its initiation timing, reagent action inside a cell, the process-water loop closing. Reachable in a couple of taps, skippable when the conversation does not need them.

The story layer, stage by stage

Stage 01 / 07 · Drill & blast

Benches drilled on a pattern, charged, and fired on an electronic timing sequence.

The detail moment here is a blast: the pattern lights up in initiation order, the face moves, and the fragmentation your customer is buying is suddenly a thing they watched happen.

Built for a stand, not a lab

The test is day three, after two hundred demos.

Anyone can make something beautiful run once, in a studio, on a cold device. An exhibition hall is hot, loud, crowded and has terrible Wi-Fi, and your stand does not get a second chance at 9am on the opening morning. So we engineer for that first.

Standalone. No venue Wi-Fi.

The whole experience runs on the headsets. A pre-configured travel router links the headsets, the facilitator tablet and the screen on a private local network. Nothing calls the internet. Everything you need travels in one case.

A facilitator drives it, from a tablet

Start a guided tour, jump straight to the stage this customer cares about, trigger a detail moment, switch to a mode where the visitor only watches and listens. Your rep keeps the conversation; the headset never takes it away from them.

The spectator screen does the selling

Two or three people are in headsets. Twenty are standing around them. A live mirror on a screen turns the crowd into the audience instead of a queue — and gives your rep something to point at while the next group waits.

One tap resets between groups

Every session ends the same way: the facilitator closes the conversation and taps reset. The next visitor starts clean, in the same state, every single time.

Built for day three, not day one

The real test is whether it still runs cleanly after two hundred demonstrations in a hot hall. Frame-rate budget is enforced from the first blockout build and quality is added inside it — never at its expense.

Thermal, battery and a hot spare

Units rotate through the day, external battery options are planned in, and a spare headset is always charged and loaded. Hardware failure at a stand is a solved problem, not a prayer.

Hygiene for high-throughput days

Wipeable facial interfaces and spare interface sets. It sounds small until it is the fourth hour of a show and the same headset has been on forty heads.

Kiosk-mode deployment

Headsets boot straight into the experience and recover cleanly from sleep, a battery swap or a clumsy handover. Nobody on your stand should ever see an operating-system menu.

    UAT and a facilitator rehearsal

    Your people run it, in front of us, with the tablet in their hands — before the event, not at it. Acceptance is your team demonstrating it competently, not a document we both sign.

Do visitors get motion sick?

This is mixed reality, not virtual reality. The visitor keeps seeing the actual room in colour passthrough — the floor, the table, your rep's face — and the model sits on the table in front of them. Nothing moves them through space, so the mismatch that causes discomfort never happens. There is no acclimatisation, no briefing, and the headset can be handed over in seconds.

What if the venue Wi-Fi is bad?

It does not matter. The experience runs entirely on the headsets, and a pre-configured travel router links the headsets, the facilitator tablet and the spectator screen on a private local network. There is no dependency on venue Wi-Fi, an external server or a PC. The only thing we need from a venue is power and a table position.

Can it run in a customer's boardroom?

Yes, and that is often where it does the most damage. The anchor works on any flat surface, so the same build that runs on your expo stand can put your operation on a customer's own boardroom table. It also runs longer-form in an innovation centre with every detail moment enabled.

Who owns the content?

You do. The commissioned content — experience design, storyboards, 3D assets and animations — is yours, and source files are handed over at final delivery. There are no per-user, per-view or per-event fees, and nothing in the platform requires an internet connection to run.

What if our plant changes, or we add products?

The value chain is built as a modular content system rather than one baked scene, so new stages, product placements, detail moments and languages are added as modules against a transparent rate card. A process change or a new product is an update to the platform, not a reason to rebuild it.

What do the other twenty people at the stand see?

A spectator screen mirroring what the person in the headset is looking at, and your facilitator narrating it from a tablet. Two or three people are inside the experience; the screen is what sells to the crowd around them, and it turns a queue into an audience.

Can several people be in it at once?

Yes. Co-located multi-headset means two to three visitors stand around the same table and see the same model at the same time. A customer delegation experiences it together and talks about it while they are still inside it, which is usually where the real conversation starts.

What happens between events?

The same build runs in an innovation centre in longer form with every detail moment enabled, and on a customer's own boardroom table for a one-to-one engagement. It is not an expo asset that sits in a crate for eleven months.

Do you support us on the day?

Yes. Handover includes an event-day runbook, a facilitator rehearsal with your own people, and training. Beyond that we offer on-call or on-site support for event days, with a technician, spare hardware, setup and teardown — from a team in the same country and the same time zone.

Which headset, and why?

Meta Quest 3 class devices. Best-in-class colour passthrough at a price that makes multiple units and a hot spare practical, fully standalone with no cables or tracking towers, mature co-located multi-user support so several people share the same model on the same table, and readily available and serviceable in South Africa. Higher-fidelity headsets cost several times more per unit and are a worse fit for shared, high-throughput event use.

How long does one demo take?

The guided pass is two to three minutes by design — short enough to hand the headset to the next person, long enough to be memorable. Depth is available on demand: each detail moment runs under a minute, so a five-minute conversation and a twenty-minute deep dive are both natural. Everything is reachable within a few taps on the facilitator tablet.
